Contraceptive Pills Actually Keep Acne At Bay – True or False?
You have a severe case of acne and nothing you do seems to help. You suffer from anxiety, and embarrassment. You’re dying to find a way to make it stop. You are not alone. It’s a common but erroneous belief that only teenagers suffer from acne. Although acne is triggered by hormonal changes that are triggered at early teenage, it can continue long after that. We see people suffering from acne even much later in their lives. While, severe cases can leave permanent scarring. And again in severe cases, conventional therapy does not work to any great extent.
Help may be here. For quite some time, dermatologists have been treating acne in women with contraceptive pills. This is generally done when all other therapies have failed, and is usually advised for women who need contraception.
So how does this work? As we mentioned earlier, hormones are the cause of acne, particularly a group of hormones called androgens, which include testosterone, and these hormones trigger the production of a substance called sebum. This waxy substance, while a natural and necessary substance can in excess cause the pores of the skin to clog. This leads to the growth of bacteria, which in their turn cause acne. So, in a way, it could be said that more hormones lead to more acne. Certain birth control pills contain estrogen and progesterone, and they can lower the androgen level in the body. Less hormones – less acne.
There are many contraceptive pills available, and not all of them are suitable for acne treatment. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) only approves three types.Basically only combination oral contraceptives that contain both estrogen and progesterone are suitable. All three are combinations of estrogen and some form of progesterone. However, the progesterone used is synthetic. Such synthetic progesterones are called progestins.
Ortho Tri-cyclen combines estrogen with a progestin called norgestimate. This is available with different doses of progestin.
Estrostep is a combination of estrogen and a progestin called norethindrone. Available with different doses of estrogen.
YAZ uses estrogen combined with a progestin called drospirenone. Although approving it, FDS has resolved that contraceptive pills containing drospirenone may elevate the risk for blood clots, compared to those congaing other progestins.
No major difference between these three pills as acne treatment, has been perceived.
There are certain limits as to who can use this therapy. They can be prescribed for treatment of moderate acneifyou:
• Are already menstruating.
• Are at least 14 or 15 years old.
• Need contraception.
Although approved for treatment of mild acne, physicians generally prescribe them for all kinds ranging from mild to severe. Often certain other pills such as Yasminor Alesseare prescribed as they have been seen to have effect on acne.
However, birth control pills only serve to cut down on excess sebum. For other reasons, topical drugs and antibiotics may be prescribed alongside with them.
Clinical trials have shown that these pills have a number of benefits;
• Fewer acne eruptions
• Lesser pimples
• Lesser inflammation
• Reduction in the severity of acne.
The use of contraceptive pills involve some risks, however. Although modern pills having lower doses of estrogen and progesterone than before, have lessened the risk to a large extent, some remain. These include side-effects like blood clots, strokes and heart attacks. Users may also suffer from hypertension and similar problems, migraines, mood swings and depression, and liver and gallbladder diseases.
You should definitely not be taking these pills if you:
• Are over 35 and a smoker
• Are already pregnant or breastfeeding
• Are physically immobilized of obese.
So never start on these things on your own, however severe your acne problem may be. Please consult your doctor.
You can curb your acne problem using contraceptive pills, albeit of a particular kind. Needless to say, you should be menstruating. Birth control pills take care or one of the main reasons for acne, namely excess sebum production. So chances are, you will find the treatment to be surprisingly effective.http://aartiinformatics.com/relationship/contraceptive-pills-actually-keep-acne-at-bay-true-or-false/Contraceptive Pills Actually Keep Acne At Bay – True or False?http://aartiinformatics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/an-acne-pill-.jpghttp://aartiinformatics.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/an-acne-pill--300x300.jpgRELATIONSHIPWOMEN'S HEALTHacne treatment, birth control pills, case of acne, contraceptive pills, contraceptive pills effects, modern pillsYou have a severe case of acne and nothing you do seems to help.
