Oldest teenager in the world passes away
Hutchinson Gilford Progeria Syndrome or more simply called HGPS or Progeria is a very rare, but debilitating disease which is caused by the mutation of the gene LMNA that strikes the very young and causes premature and rapid aging of the body.
Hayley Okines a teenager suffering from Progeria, passed away on 2nd April at the age of 19. At that time, her body had aged to 104 years, having aged at nearly 8 times faster. Sufferers of progeria begin to display symptoms such as growth failure, loss of hair and body fat, wrinkled skin and stiffness of joints at around 18-24 months. The usually expire in their teens from heart disease brought on by atherosclerosis which is a hardening of arteries that strike normal people in old age. Sadly, this condition is incurable.
Hayley was a very courageous person who wouldn’t give in to this condition. While the average lifespan of children with this condition is 14 years, Hayley penned her autobiography entitled “Old before My Time” at that age. The fact that she broke the age barrier was due to her participation in a pioneer drug treatment in the USA.Inclusion in the British TV Series “Extraordinary People” brought her international recognition and celebrity status. She and her family decided to make use of this opportunity to try to raise awareness about this disease.
During her short life he met Prince Charles, Kylie Minogue and Justin Bieber, appeared in many documentaries, spoke on many occasions and travelled widely for the cause. She has inspired many people with her candidness and optimism.
After she passed away, Kerry, her mother announced on Facebook, “My baby girl has gone somewhere better. She took her last breath in my arms at 9.39pm x.” This announcement received a massive response.
