Mindfulness Meditation – It Help You To Fall (And Stay) Asleep
It looks like a new study is published every week pointing to another physical or mental health benefit of mindfulness. A research undertaken recently reveals that mindfulness meditation perhaps can help avert age-related cognitive decline among adults. And a second study recently discovered that the practice could help children improve their math skills.
Now, a latest University of Southern California study recommends that mindfulness meditation can boost sleep quality for older adults with sleep disturbances, including trouble falling or staying asleep, or feeling sleepy during the day. 9 older adults with an average age of 66 were chosen to participate in the study; these adults suffered from a mild form of sleep disturbance. Group A constituting 24 participants took part in a Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPS) intervention, while the Group B underwent a Sleep Hygiene Education (SHE) course. Both interventions carried on for 6 weeks, and included 2 hours of training time, plus homework, each week.
The researchers discovered that the mindfulness group displayed marked improvements in their ability to fall and stay asleep relative to the sleep hygiene group.
Sleep disturbances can greatly affect quality of life, and have been linked with daytime symptoms like fatigue, mood fluctuations and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, the group that underwent the mindfulness intervention experienced decrease in certain sleep-related daytime symptoms of sleep loss, including anxiety, stress, depression and inflammatory markers often associated with sleep deprivation. “According to our findings, mindfulness meditation appears to have a role in addressing the prevalent burden of sleep problems among older adults,” the study’s authors wrote.
Though past studies have linked mindfulness as a personality trait to improved sleep quality among healthy populations, the connection of mindfulness to sleep disturbance has been less clear. Both decline in sleep disturbances and the daytime carryover noted in the research group that underwent mindfulness training indicates that mindfulness meditation interventions is perhaps a powerful means of boosting quality of life among older adults. Poor sleep also markedly increases the risk of scores of negative health outcomes — indicating that mindfulness training holds promise as a measure for improving overall health among older adults.
